Himachal CM Calls for Fairer Disaster Risk Assessment for Hill States

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister has appealed to the 16th Finance Commission for a crucial change: a reframed Disaster Risk Index specifically designed for hill states like Himachal. He emphasized that the current index doesn’t adequately capture the unique challenges and vulnerabilities faced by these mountainous regions.

Current Index Overlooks Mountain-Specific Risks

The Chief Minister pointed out that the existing Disaster Risk Index fails to account for the specific geographical factors that make hill states more susceptible to natural disasters. Landslides, flash floods, and earthquakes pose constant threats, and the current index doesn’t fully reflect these realities. This oversight can lead to insufficient resource allocation for disaster preparedness and relief in these vulnerable areas.

Fair Resource Allocation Crucial for Hill State Safety

A revised index, the CM argues, is vital for ensuring fair and equitable distribution of resources. By accurately assessing the risks faced by hill states, the Finance Commission can better allocate funds for disaster mitigation and management, ultimately protecting the lives and livelihoods of those living in these challenging environments.
